Exploring Visual Voice
// kinetic typography

Deliverables: Kinetic typography video, single image + typography setting
Timeframe: Four weeks, Fall 2012

The purpose of this project was to choose a favorite quote and then explore how visual and audio elements could enhance or challenge the meaning of the text. I chose to explore one of my favorite quotes from Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra,

"I love the great despisers, because they are the great adorers, and arrows of longing for the other shore."

Using this quote, I first explored how position, chunking and letterspacing each effected the comprehension and visual effect of the quote in a static format. The final products were a kinetic typography piece and a simple typographic layout paired with an image. The following are my mood boards and typography studies that led to the final choice of typeface and the mood and design of the final movie. I had never created a kinetic typography piece or used Adobe After Effects before this project, so was quite happy with my final product.

PROCESS: Moodboards

The final portion of this project was to select a single, square image to pair with a typographic piece set only in one weight of Univers. Photo credit for the first black and white image below goes to Jayson Yagi.

While some of my peers found the quote itself difficult, everyone agreed that the mood and music choices supported the quote well in the video. The images sparked some lively dialogue on the meaning of the quote as well.
